It was just the two of them. Sweet and simple — just the way they wanted it. They chose to not invite any family or friends (though they knew about it!), and are instead sharing my photos with them after the fact. Justine + Grant had the only wedding at the courthouse on Monday, so we had the 3rd floor hallway pretty much to ourselves. We did a few portraits while we waiting for the bailiff to call us in, and then asked them to pretend I wasn’t there while I snapped some candids. We were then called in to the courtroom, and Judge Heidi Ladd performed the quick ceremony. There were still a few minutes left in our session time, so they hopped on the elevator for one of my signature elevator shots, one quick photo with the Champaign County seal, and then on to the beautiful outside of the courthouse where we finished up with some more portraits and action shots. I always love a good dancing twirl photo! <3
If you’ve been around this blog for a while, you know that I’m a sucker for courthouse weddings. I LOVE them. It is such a fun way to spend a lunch hour… hanging out with people on one of the happiest days of their lives, even if only for an hour.
Jody + Kye were out in front of the courthouse pinning on boutonnieres and such when I arrived, so I started snapping right away! We then made our way through the metal detectors (no phones allowed!). Empty your pockets, take off your belts, you may still get wanded anyway. It comes with the territory! :)
There were I think 5 weddings that day, so we had to wait a bit for our turn, but I took that opportunity to get some portraits of the couple, some family group photos, and some candid shots of the couple interacting with each other and chatting with their friends and families.
And how amazing was Jody’s bouquet??? It was created by Delight Flower Farm, and was perfect for a fall wedding, complementing Jody’s dress so perfectly. Following the ceremony with Judge Rosenbaum, we headed outside to do a few more portraits outside the pretty courthouse building. Congrats, Jody + Kye! Thank you for bringing me along to your official nuptials!!
Last Friday I had the distinct pleasure of photographing another wedding at the Champaign County Courthouse in Urbana. These intimate elopements are one of the best ways to spend my lunch hour, and I am so happy that I have 3 of them to photograph this summer!
Emily + Ramsey chose their June 15 date as it was their 5-year dating anniversary, though they've known each other for 12 years! Their adorable little boy Max came along too and got in a few photos, and even got to "sign" as the witness (Champaign County marriage licenses don't require a witness, so it didn't have to be official). :) How cute are his little suspenders?! The couple also invited their immediate family and grandparents to attend, so we also snapped some family photos before heading into the courtroom to see the judge.
Weddings at the courthouse are first come, first served, so you never know how long you'll have to wait. Lucky for us, Ramsey got there early and got us a spot 3rd in line! That allowed us some time after the ceremony to do some photos outside of the courthouse too, which are always some of my favorite portraits -- a bit more relaxed and room to move outside the crowded hallways. I asked them to dance a bit, and then we had them cross the street for the grand finale!
My friend Tori Beach came along too as their wedding filmmaker, and I am so excited to see Tori's finished highlight video!
Congrats, Emily + Ramsey! Best wishes to your little family!
