When Your Work Becomes Personal: A Brand Session Rooted in Purpose
There are brand sessions… and then there are brand sessions that mean something deeper.
My recent session with April of GiveWillow was one of those.
April is stepping into a new chapter—one that’s rooted in purpose, compassion, and real-life experience. GiveWillow is an online platform designed to support families navigating loss, offering a space for community, communication, and tangible care during incredibly difficult times. It’s not just a business—it’s personal. Built from her family’s story, the heart behind it is undeniable.
And that’s exactly what we wanted her photos to reflect.
A Brand That Feels as Much as It Functions
From the very beginning, April described the brand as intentional, compassionate, supportive, encouraging, and authentic.
But those aren’t just buzzwords. They’re a responsibility.
When your work lives in a space as emotional as grief and loss, your brand imagery has to do more than “look good.” It has to feel safe. It has to feel human. It has to build trust before a single word is ever read.
So we approached her session with that in mind:
Clean, professional headshots to align with her team
Lifestyle imagery that shows her in action—working, connecting, guiding
Subtle storytelling moments that reflect both professionalism and empathy
Studio + A Little Bit of Champaign Charm
We started in my downtown Champaign studio, where I had full control over lighting and could create a polished, cohesive look for her primary brand images. I love the deep green textured jacket she chose, along with many thoughtful on-brand props that felt like they belonged.
From there, we stepped just outside into the surrounding block area—one of my favorite things about my studio location! Within just a short walk, we were able to capture a completely different feel: a little more relaxed, a little more in the community, and perfect for the “real-life connection” side of her brand.
That mix is where the magic happens.
Because most business owners don’t just need one type of image. They need a full library that supports everything from websites to social media to advertising.
The Power of Reinvention in Business
April’s session is also a really beautiful example of something I talk about often:
You are allowed to evolve.
Whether you’re launching something brand new or pivoting into a different industry, your brand should grow with you. And when it does, your visuals need to keep up.
In April’s case, this wasn’t just a simple refresh; it was stepping into an entirely new role, a new voice, and a new audience.
That kind of shift deserves intention, thoughtfulnes, and strategy.
It deserves imagery that says:
I’m confident here.
I’m aligned with this work.
You can trust me in this space.
Because when you’re asking people to connect with you, especially in vulnerable moments, your brand has to meet them there.
More Than Headshots
One of the things April specifically wanted was a mix of strong, professional headshots and supporting images that show her as a resource within our local community and beyond.
One key takeaway here that I think a lot of business owner miss:
Headshots get you recognized.
Brand imagery gets you remembered.
The in-between moments: taking a phone call, working on a laptop, interacting with a client, simply being present… those are the images that make your brand feel real and relatable.
Final Thoughts
At the end of the day, this session wasn’t just about creating beautiful images.
It was about helping April visually step (quite literally in this photo to the right!) into the work she’s been called to do.
Rebranding, pivoting, & reinventing… it can feel overwhelming. But it’s also where some of the most meaningful businesses are born.
And when your story, your purpose, and your visuals all align?
That’s when your brand really starts to connect.
If you’re in a season of change, whether you’re launching something new or refining what already exists, this is your reminder that your brand deserves to evolve with you.
And I’d love to help you bring that next chapter to life.
